Isyport

An innovative system for navigation safety in ports

What is Isyport?

The Isyport project addresses the challenge of navigation safety within ports and in areas adjacent to port infrastructure—that is, in those zones where the highest number of maritime accidents occur, particularly collisions and impacts. The project’s objective is to create a coordinated system of innovative methods and tools, based on information derived from numerical simulations, sensors, and decision-support tools, designed to detect hazardous events and thus provide support for situational awareness.

What is proposed

The Isyport project addresses the challenge of navigation safety within ports and in areas adjacent to port infrastructure—that is, in those zones where the highest number of maritime accidents occur, particularly collisions and impacts. The project’s objective is to create a coordinated system of innovative methods and tools, based on information from numerical simulations, sensors, and decision-support tools, aimed at recognizing hazardous events and thus capable of supporting “situational awareness.” To this end, modeling chains have been developed to provide reliable marine weather forecasts. The project also involves the development of systems for monitoring meteorological and sea conditions and tracking ship routes using X-band radar and infrared imaging systems. This information will be made available to the vessels concerned through the development of an assisted navigation platform accessible to all users and capable of significantly improving navigation safety even under adverse meteorological and sea conditions and reduced visibility. Thanks to the implementation of a real-time sensor data fusion and analysis system, users—both professional and recreational—will be able to share all necessary information with one another and with port operators to ensure safe maneuvering within the port. To validate the developed tools, a pilot test will be conducted at the ports of Augusta and Catania, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Sicilian Sea. This choice is based on the fact that, according to the European Maritime Safety Agency report (2015), 42% of maritime accidents occur in so-called confined waters. Therefore, ports represent the ideal testing ground for evaluating the system being developed under the Isyport project.
