TERRA was created as a strategic response to the challenges facing the agri-food supply chain

What is TERRA?

TERRA was created as a strategic response to the challenges threatening the agri-food supply chain, a sector of excellence that has been thrown into crisis by three main factors: climate change, globalization, and human impact. Climate change—including droughts, irregular rainfall, and extreme weather events—reduces productivity and promotes the spread of pests, while globalization accelerates the spread of diseases and non-native species, compromising soil and water resources.

What is proposed

TERRA – Technologies for Eco-Sustainability, Regeneration, and Agricultural Resilience was established as a strategic response to the challenges threatening the agri-food supply chain, a sector of excellence now facing a crisis due to three main factors: climate change, globalization, and human impact. Climate changes—including droughts, irregular rainfall, and extreme weather events—reduce productivity and facilitate the spread of pests, while globalization accelerates the circulation of diseases and non-native species, compromising soils and water resources. Added to this are intensive exploitation and the depletion of aquifers. In this context, TERRA aims to create a modular technological platform for the design and management of agri-food production, processing, and distribution, in line with the European Farm to Fork strategy and the Puglia Region’s S3 initiative. The goal is to combat soil degradation, mitigate climate impacts, optimize water resources, and ensure safe and sustainable production. The platform will integrate smart agriculture models and digital tools to support various decision-making levels:
• Food System Envision (FSE), a decision support system for interventions in the agri-food supply chain;
• Food System Design (FSD) for the design and implementation of interventions;
• Food System Management (FSM) for operational management; all connected to the Food System Data Platform.

At the heart of the project will be the Smart Farm House (SG), an advanced operational center for testing and validating the innovative solutions developed within the project. TERRA also aims to create an interconnected business ecosystem, useful to companies and public administrations for monitoring the territory, managing environmental emergencies, and supporting decision-making. The technologies developed in Puglia will be exported to other markets, particularly in the Mediterranean and on the west coast of the United States. In summary, the TERRA project uses digitalization and smart agriculture to make the agri-food supply chain more resilient, sustainable, and regenerative, transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for innovation and growth.
