ISMI

Integrated Storage and Microgrid Innovation

What is ISMI?

The project aims to promote integrated and efficient energy planning that involves traditional and renewable energy generators, storage systems, and loads, with the goal of enhancing the grid-feeding capacity of distributed generation and increasing energy production and distribution on smaller islands. This goal is pursued through the intelligent and communicative coordination of grid subsystems, by implementing a unified architecture for the stable and efficient control of microgrids, integrated with control logic (Microgrid Controller) and storage systems.

What is proposed

The project aims to promote integrated and efficient energy planning that involves traditional and renewable energy generators, storage systems, and loads, with the goal of enhancing the grid-feeding capacity of distributed generation and increasing energy production and distribution on smaller islands. This goal is pursued through the intelligent and communicative coordination of grid subsystems, achieved by implementing a unified architecture for the stable and efficient control of microgrids, integrated with control logic (Microgrid Controller) and storage systems. The architecture is designed for isolated or weakly connected grids, such as those on smaller Italian islands, but is also applicable to broader contexts with distribution networks disconnected from the transmission grid. EHT contributed to the project with the architectural-functional design and the development of an OpenCloud platform capable of monitoring the energy consumption of residences connected to the microgrid, analyzing events and demand profiles, negotiating load-limitation constraints with users, and assessing user sentiment toward the electricity service. Among the assets developed by EHT are a mobile app and a digital platform designed to encourage active user participation in grid management, improving awareness and consumption efficiency through personalized suggestions and serious gaming mechanisms. The platform enables consumption profiling, energy demand forecasting, and interaction with the distributor to optimize supply and facilitate requests for consumption reduction. The expertise acquired by EHT includes energy profiling, the development of predictive and dispatch algorithms, big data management, data visualization, and the design of advanced user experiences.
