A technological tool for managing overtourism and promoting alternative itineraries

What is FRECCIA?

The main objective of the FRECCIA project is to mitigate the risks associated with overtourism and social tensions through an innovative technological tool designed to assist visitors and tourists in planning and managing their historical and artistic itineraries, taking into account the overcrowding dynamics at points of interest (PoIs). This tool is based on recommendation models for visiting alternative PoIs, identifying underutilized sites of interest to which tourist flows can be redirected in the event of overcrowding at the main ones, while simultaneously promoting the revitalization and use of outlying areas.

What is proposed

The main objective of the FRECCIA project is to mitigate the risks associated with overtourism and social tensions through an innovative technological tool designed to assist visitors and tourists in planning and managing their historical and artistic itineraries, taking into account the dynamics of overcrowding at points of interest (PoIs). This tool is based on recommendation models for visiting alternative PoIs, identifying underutilized points of interest to which tourist flows can be redirected in the event of overcrowding at the main ones, while simultaneously promoting the revitalization and use of outlying areas. To achieve the project’s objectives, a comprehensive analysis of data from diverse sources—where possible—is essential, such as data provided by telecommunications companies (TELCO), integrations with Google APIs, or user-generated content on social media (Twitter, Instagram, etc.). Starting with an examination and comparison of existing studies and institutional references on overtourism (European Parliament, 2018), we will proceed to define overcrowding indicators, evaluate the data sources to be utilized, and develop models to simulate the population dynamics of Points of Interest (PoIs).
