VIRTUOUS

Virtual Worlds Infrastructure for Real-Time, Trustworthy, User-Centric, Secure, and Edge-Enabled Systems

What is VIRTUOSE?

VIRTUOSE (Virtual Worlds Infrastructure for Real-Time, Trustworthy, User-Oriented, Secure and Edge-enabled Systems) addresses the growing need for scalable, interoperable, and compliant immersive technologies in the healthcare and research sectors in Europe.
Current virtual reality, augmented reality, and extended reality solutions remain fragmented, limited in interoperability, and insufficiently aligned with regulatory, ethical, and performance requirements, hindering large-scale deployment in critical domains.
The project will develop V-Builder, an open, modular, and edge-native platform that will enable the creation and deployment of adaptive, multilingual, and human-centered virtual worlds. V-Builder integrates generative AI, multimodal interaction, Digital Twin, and a Telco Cloud–Edge orchestration framework to support low-latency, real-time immersive experiences in distributed environments.
Compliance-by-design principles aligned with the GDPR, the EU AI Act, and the Medical Device Regulation will be integrated throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring trust, transparency, and security.
VIRTUOSE will validate its approach through three high-impact demonstrators addressing key challenges in the healthcare sector: adaptive communication training for children with autism spectrum disorders, AI-assisted XR guidance for ultrasound procedures, and immersive digital twin environments for multi-omic research on psychosis. These use cases will demonstrate greater training effectiveness, improved clinical performance, and collaborative research capabilities in real-world settings.
By reaching TRL 6 and engaging a broad ecosystem of stakeholders, VIRTUOSE will create a scalable and interoperable virtual worlds infrastructure in line with Web 4.0 principles. The project will strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty, promote innovation among SMEs, and enable the transition of immersive technologies from isolated pilot projects to a reliable and deployable digital infrastructure in the healthcare sector and beyond.
