IM-SAFE - Intelligent and Sensing Micromobility Solutions for Safer and More Active Environments: Micromobility, active transportation, and connected services are playing an increasingly central role in urban mobility systems. As the number of cyclists, pedestrians, and micromobility users increases, cities face increasingly demanding challenges in managing interactions among diverse road users and ensuring the safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs). Although active mobility reduces emissions and congestion, these benefits depend on managing safety risks through coordinated, data-driven, and cooperative solutions. European initiatives such as the Strategy for Smart and Sustainable Mobility, the EU Green Deal, Vision 2030, and Horizon Europe emphasize road safety, digitalization, and inclusive mobility. IM-SAFE responds by developing, integrating, and validating technically advanced safety assessment methodologies, cooperative awareness-raising services, and interoperable smart technologies for vulnerable road users. The project addresses key conflict scenarios involving vulnerable road users (close overtaking, conflicts at intersections, failure to yield, and speed mismatches). Through three pilot projects, IM-SAFE will collect exposure and safety data, analyze infrastructure- and behavior-related risk factors, and validate cooperative solutions such as V2X-based awareness mechanisms and user-centered information services. Using a human-centered, evidence-based approach, the project brings together expertise in mobility safety, public authorities, artificial intelligence, communications engineering, and social sciences. Designed to be replicated and scaled across European municipal networks, IM-SAFE will provide transferable methodologies, datasets, and tools to support data-driven decision-making, improve actual and perceived safety, and enable the integration of micromobility into urban planning and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans. With 7 leading research institutions and 5 high-performing SMEs, IM-SAFE positions Europe as a global leader in urban mobility and road safety innovation, contributing to safer, more resilient, and more inclusive mobility systems.
